Grief is a natural expression of love and a normal human reaction to a significant loss. When people are not able to express their grief verbally, it often surfaces in their behavior, academics, physical and/or emotional well-being. Children, adolescents - and even adults - are not always able to express their feelings in words, and often need someone to guide them through their grief...
Someone to listen to their stories and guide them through the grief process. RAINBOWS is that someone. Grief is a process, not a specific emotion. It is not fear. It is not sadness. But rather it is a constellation of conflicting feelings; feelings that occur in stages:
Bargaining - "If only..." or "What if?" an attempt to exchange something we are willing to do or give up for something we want to keep. It is an attempt to postpone or patch the inevitable. Anger - "Why me?" deep-seated rage over what is happening. Depression - "What’s the use?" the feeling of being unable to cope. Life is out of control or overwhelming. It is a time of highs and lows that happen due to the reality setting in. Acceptance - "Life does go on..." learning to live with the change. The past is no longer dwelled upon and the future holds some hope.
Grief can be a positive experience, which will provide a foundation for personal growth and strength. No matter how old one becomes, a part of each person still remains someone’s child.
